He was predeceased by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Fred Patterson, and Patricia and Ron Gyles; and brothers-in-law Robert Bravo and Eugene Drew.

He is survived by his daughter, Jean (Ronald) Eldridge; brother James (Gael) Marshall; sisters Mary Bravo and Catherine Drew; granddaughter Jessica Lord; great grandchildren Savannah and Alexa; several nieces and nephews, and extended family and close friends.

Tom was very active in the Mechanics Club in Montour Falls and loved to travel all over with them. He also loved golfing.

The family will welcome your thoughts and prayers at this time, but services will be held privately.

Janine Benjamin-Kuehl, age 68, died on Thursday, November 21, 2024 after a short illness. She died at home in North Myrtle Beach, SC, with her family and beloved dog nearby.

Janine is survived by her husband of 42 years, James; her daughter, Ashley Stone (Jemuel), and a large extended family. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Wanda and Carl Benjamin, her brothers Denny and Thomas, and her sister, Marilyn.

Janine completed her undergraduate studies at Clark University, and earned her advanced degree from the University of Scranton. She worked for many years as Director of Social Work for Schuyler Hospital, and as a patient care specialist at Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca. She left healthcare to run a successful bridal shop in Montour Falls, NY before relocating in North Myrtle Beach, where she continued working as a real estate agent.

She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, intelligence, strength of character, and good judgment, on which many people came to rely. She loved those around her ferociously and was a second mom to many of Ashley’s friends who she helped in more ways than she realized.

There are no services planned, according to Janine’s wishes. Anyone wishing to honor her memory would do so appropriately by offering kindness to someone, or in remembering her fondly as someone who was dedicated to helping life to be better for those around her.

Peggy Kay Brown States

Age 77, of Montour Falls, NY, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. She was born in Montour Falls on July 23, 1947, the daughter of the late Harold and Frances (Ward) Brown, and graduated from Odessa-Montour Central School.

Peggy worked at Chemung Canal Trust Company in Montour Falls for 45 years. She enjoyed traveling, biking and going to car shows. She was an animal lover and enjoyed walking. She could often be seen walking around Montour Falls when she was working and in her retirement.

She is survived by her children, Kevin States (Heather) of Odessa, NY and Kelly States (Michael) of Knoxville, TN; her companion of 34 years, Clair Gunning and his family -- Ciera and Claire Cole; grandsons, Kyle States (Olivia) and Jeffrey Steiner (Sarah); sister, Susan Brown (Ron) of Florida; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Michael Brown.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls. A celebration of her life will follow at noon at the Montour Moose Lodge, 2096 State Route 14, Montour Falls. Burial will be in Union Cemetery of Hector at a later date.

Age 87, passed away on October 13, 2024 at her home in Dundalk, Maryland.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lee Anne and Thomas D'Alleva; her son Basil Blank; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and many loving cousins and friends, including Irene Crout, Lana Epstein, James Chu, and his daughter June Chu. Frances will be dearly missed by friends, family and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Frances had a passion for travel and cherished memories of her many trips to China, Japan, and Sicily, as well as sailing excursions with family in the Chesapeake and British Virgin Islands.

Margaret was born on June 2, 1927, the daughter of the late Claude and Sarah (Scott) Joslyn. She enjoyed working with her late husband, Floyd States, at States Cider Mill in Odessa, warming up in sunny Florida and enjoying time with family and friends.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Floyd States; granddaughter Jolene Davy; brothers Dick Joslyn, David Joslyn, Claude Joslyn and Gary Joslyn; and sisters Velma Leonard, Shirley Buck and Alice Sampson.

Age 61, of Beaver Dams, NY passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Robert Packer Hospital.

Kelly was born in Montour Falls, NY on August 20, 1963 to Charles and Jeri (Blanchard) Starkweather. She earned an Associate’s degree from Corning Community College, and worked as a supervisor in the Dietary Department of Schuyler Hospital for 15 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, along with dirt track racing with her husband and sister.

Kelly was predeceased by her parents; her sister Rayne, and her brother Charles “Skip” Starkweather. She is survived by her husband of seven years, Donald Duvall; daughters, Kristine (James) Peterson of Burdett, NY and Katrina Hart of Lindley, NY; a son, Ken (Jesus) Wright of Rochester, NY; a sister, Valerie Starkweather of Watkins Glen, NY; and seven grandchildren: Austin, Philip, Shyanne, Peyton, Kayden, Gaige and Hunter.

Age 89, of Alpine, NY passed away in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Bert was born in Alpine, the son of Bert and Estella (Thurber) VanZile, and graduated from Odessa High School. He then went on to a career as a corrections officer, retiring from Collins Correctional Facility in 1986. Bert was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 49 and was Commissioner of the Sullivan Trail Council. He was a member of the Montour Moose Lodge and the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club NY Chapter #5, and attended the Alpine Baptist Church. In his spare time, Bert enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and was an avid outdoorsman.

Bert was predeceased by his parents, Bert & Estella (Thurber) VanZile, Sr.; a sister, Pearl DeRuyter; daughter Carol Ann VanZile, son Donald Goodwin, daughter-in-law Debra VanZile, son-in-law Richard Mathews; and grandson Matthew VanZile.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Catherine VanZile; daughters Cathy-Rae Mathews and Margaret (Richard) Starbuck; sons Richard (Sheree) Goodwin, Carlton VanZile and Russell (Robin) VanZile; a sister, Eva Arcangeli; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Bert also leaves behind his beloved four-legged "girlfriend" named Sandy.

Obituary: Dr. Robert Frederick, Jr.

Dr. Robert Wendell "Bob" Frederick, Jr.

Age 96, former President of Corning Community College (1966-1976), mathematics and science professor, passed away peacefully at Bampa’s House in Corning, NY on October 23, 2024. He was born in Chicago in 1927 to Robert Wendell Frederick Sr. (also an education professor) and Eleanor Machlin.

Bob Jr. was educated at Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, New York, and Yale University (BS in aeronautical engineering) in 1948 and earned a Doctoral degree in Education at Teachers College of Columbia in New York City. His first teaching position was at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, New Jersey. In 1953 he married Doris Field Frederick, dental hygienist and later elementary teacher in the C-PP school district. They celebrated 64 years together until Doris’s passing in October 2017.

He is survived by Cindee, of Watkins Glen; she remained a devoted loving daughter and caregiver helping her dad fulfill his wishes by visiting Niagara Falls and the ocean. In addition to Cindee he is survived by brother Dr. Peter Frederick (Carol Allis) of MN, who provided support through regular phone calls; grandson Nick Crosby (of Watkins Glen), dedicated loving supportive helper, caregiver, and companion; granddaughter Ashley Tackett, who provided great assistance when she visited, as well as enormous love and support from her home in KY; and Justin Tackett, grandson by marriage, who consistently provided much needed strength, love, and compassion to the family. Also, cousins, nieces and nephews around the globe. In addition, many other people whose lives Bob touched with his sweet kindness and infectious smile. He will be fondly remembered by many people in Watkins Glen who would see him on daily walks in the village wearing his bright orange sweatshirt, carrying his cane, and chatting with local folks and tourists.

Dr. Frederick spent time in California teaching math, physics and engineering at a community college in Bakersfield. In 1958, Bob and Doris returned to New York to take a position with the New York State Department of Education. In 1966 he was hired as President of Corning Community College; later moving into a faculty position to teach math and physics.

Bob’s lifelong passions were his family, sailing on Seneca Lake, science, equity, diversity, inclusivity, cooking, playing piano, asking questions, expanding his mind, and listening to classical music.

As for music, Bob decided to replace the accordion (he played with zest in younger years) with the piano, and eventually classical pieces on a challenging 3-register church pipe organ at Elmira’s Grace Episcopal Church. Doris said that the organ was “his biggest love and sharing this love with others his greatest happiness.”

Another “biggest love” was his daughter Cindee. She and her Dad agreed on a private family ceremony next to Doris andoverlooking Seneca Lake. A place for peace and quiet.

He had a community of online friends that also meant a lot to him including Jack Maniac, Oliver, Zachary B, Zainy, Matt Dismas Jr., Matthew B, Dan, Aiden, Eden Suki, Robert “Foolz,” Tzarbombah, Durr, Dominic L, Aiden Ziril, Coper, Alex, Liam M. and Danghul. All will feel his loss terribly.

Ian graduated from Horseheads High School in 2022 and was a second-year student at Corning Community College. He lived his life to the fullest. Ian was an outstanding musician, guitar player, song writer and singer. He displayed these talents with performances at many venues across the east coast and within his online community.

Mary graduated from the Odessa High School and was employed as a secretary by the Ithaca School District for 30 years. Mary also found joy in watching NASCAR races, bird watching and traveling, as well as spending time with the children and grandchildren during family gatherings.

Mary was predeceased by her former husband, Gerald Hubbell, along with former daughter-in-law Linda Hubbell, sisters Margie Bailey, Harriet Bailey and Irene Hubbell, as well as her longtime companion Jack Williams.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Hubbell of Enfield, NY; son, Dennis Hubbell of Enfield; and sisters, Wilma Page of Columbus, OH, and Kay Kannegiser of Florida and Maine. Mary is also survived by her four grandchildren, Steven Hubbell, Stephanie Hubbell, Rich Simmons and Shawna Simmons; her nine great-grandchildren, Madison, Mason, Madix, Kayden, Katilina, Kiyanna, Tatyanna, Amari and Bryson; along with several nieces and nephews.

David Paul Woodworth

Age 68, of Ocklawaha, Florida,and formerly of Watkins Glen, NY, passed away on September 14, 2024. Born on October 8, 1955, in Corning, NY to Jack and Kathryn Woodworth, David was a graduate of Watkins Glen High School, Class of 1974.

He leaves behind his wife, Ann Woodworth; his sons Jack (Charisse) and Cody; stepsons Joshua, Raymond Charles, and Andrew (Kelly) Caccamis; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol and Edna, and his brother Paul.

David served three years in the Army after high school. He devoted his life to serving others, beginning with a stint as a police officer in Watkins Glen for a year and a half before transitioning to a state trooper role in Wyoming. He then shifted careers to become a firefighter and EMT in Casper, Wyoming.

Those were busy years as he also served in the Wyoming National Guard for 11 years. After retirement, he took on roles in a hospital lab and as an ER Paramedic. Additionally, he spent 30 years teaching EMT and CPR courses at the University of Wyoming.

David treasured his hunting memories, particularly those shared with his father, uncles, and cousins in Steuben County, NY. His father, uncles Charlie and Lewis, and close cousins also ventured on hunting expeditions to Wyoming for elk and mule deer. David and his cousin Steve, who he regarded as a brother, even organized guided hunts for a Colorado outfitter.

Following his move to Florida in 2018, David embraced his faith as a Jehovah’s Witness, dedicating himself to sharing his Bible-based hope with others.

Age 41, of Montour Falls, NY, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. She was born on April 3, 1983 in Ithaca, NY, the daughter of Teena Acker-Wright and Roscoe John Acker, Jr. She graduated from High School and received her CNA license through BOCES. On June 28, 2008 she married Richard Derr in Odessa, NY.

April was a medical office assistant at Arnot-Ogden for six years. Prior to that, she worked as a CNA at Schuyler Hospital, Lakeside and Brookdale.

April was a “fun loving,” hard working, dedicated wife and mother who cared very much for her daughters, pets and special step-mom, Babette Bibeau. April always had a smile and a silly sense of humor that made people around her laugh. To know her was to love her. She will be missed by many who will carry lots of memories and cherish the moments they shared.

April is survived by her husband of 16 years, Richard Derr; two daughters, Ashlynn and Addison Derr; a son, Anthony Lateroca of New Jersey; her mother Teena Wright of Florida; father Roscoe John Acker Jr.; brother, Roger (Michelle) Acker of Florida; aunts and uncles, Steve (Chrissy) Wright, Tammi (Keary)Rouff; and by numerous cousins.

Age 76, of Montour Falls, NY, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024. He was born in Elmira, NY on March 24, 1948, the son of the late John and Charlotte (Fox) Barr, and graduated from Odessa-Montour High School in 1967. On April 11, 1969, he married Ruth M. Clark in Horseheads, NY.

Fred worked at Shepard-Niles in Montour Falls for 30 years and later retired from Hilliard Corp. in Elmira. He was a member and Past Fire Chief of the Montour Falls Fire Department. He was a member of the Mechanics Club and Montour Moose Club. Fred was also an avid card player.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth M. Barr; four children, Fred Barr and Michael Barr, both of Montour Falls, Christopher Barr of Corning and Wendy (Sean) Austin of Montour Falls; brother, Nate (Denise) Barr of Burdett, NY; sister, Lucy Barr of Montour Falls; three grandchildren, Trent, Kylie and Daniel; and by many nieces and nephews.

Gary Francis Chapin

Age 73, of Bentley Creek, PA, passed away on September 30, 2024 at his home.

He was born in Elmira, NY on April 9, 1951, the son of the late George and Genevieve (Binney) Chapin. Gary graduated from Southside High School in Elmira in 1969. He was a machinist with Hardinge Brothers for over 40 years.

Gary was a ham radio operator, call sign KA2DNV. He was active in the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 676. Gary participated in Civil War reenactments and was the Armorer for Catlin Camp #341, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He also enjoyed camping with his friends.

Gary is survived by two daughters, Patricia Price and Teresa Drucker of Bloomsburg, PA; one son, Bill Chapin and his wife Kimberley (Watts) Chapin of Choctaw, OK; and six grandchildren, Rebecca Drucker, Sarah Drucker, Jylian Bohner, Hunter Price, Reid Price and Darin Chapin. He was predeceased by his wives, Diane (Hill) Chapin and Melody (Douglas) Chapin; longtime companion, Marie Decker; sister, Katherine Chapin; and grandson, Dylan Chapin.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery, 715 W. Broad St., Horseheads, NY. Age 72, formerly of Watkins Glen, NY, passed away after a brief illness on September 30, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Tom was born on January 25, 1952 in Waverly, New York. He was the eldest son of the late William and Marjorie Merrill. He was also preceded in passing by his siblings Deat (Cindy), Barbara (Walt), and John.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara; son Tony (Rhonda); daughter Michelle (John) LaBrier, and their foreign exchange students turned family Olaf (Miriam) Inndorf and Chompoonut Visuteematakul. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Kaley (James) Merrill, Trysten LaBrier, Ashton Merrill, Austin Merrill, Jan Inndorf, Jason Merrill, Scarlett LaBrier, Olivia LaBrier, and Sebastian Inndorf. He is also survived by his siblings Bill (Annette), Ann (Danny), Nancy (Danny), and Jeff, as well as sister-in-law Juliana.

Tom graduated from Odessa-Montour Central School in 1970. He then attended Corning Community College before joining the U.S. Army and marrying his high school sweetheart, Barb, on November 13, 1971. Tom served in the Army from 1971-1975, stationed in Okinawa, Japan for part of his enlistment. Upon returning home, he continued in the Army Reserves, where he served for the next eight years while he also attended Alfred State College, graduating with his AAS degree in Land Surveying in 1977. He went on to work in the surveying industry for the next 41 years, first at firms in Rochester, then Maryland. He then opened his own survey business in Watkins Glen while partnering with his wife in Echoes of the Glen Bed & Breakfast until their joint retirement in 2019. Following their retirement they moved back to their family cabin in Nunda, NY, which he built with his own hands back in 1982 with the help of generous family and friends.

Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and doing just about anything hands-on; he loved to see something come together from nothing. He found happiness in his time with his family, especially if that time was spent out on the boat listening to Jimmy Buffett. He always had a soft spot for a four-legged friend, and we know his buddy Smokey was the first one to meet him at the Gates.

Tom was a longtime member of the New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors, the Finger Lakes Association of Professional Land Surveyors, the Genesee Valley Land Surveyors Association, the Maryland Society of Surveyors, the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce, and American Legion Seager Werner Post 333.

Calling hours will be held at the Mann Funeral Home in Nunda, NY on Friday, October 4, 2024 from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., a brief service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, Tom’s family would greatly appreciate contributions being made in his name to a charity of your choice, or to the Nunda Volunteer Ambulance.

Age 51, of Burdett, NY, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at home. He was born in Oceanside, NY on December 17, 1972, the son of the late Ernest and Helen Zafonte. He graduated from Watkins Glen Central School in 1992.

Chris was a superintendent for Streeter Associates in Elmira for 25 years. He was a Union Carpenter Member of Local 277 for 27 years.

Kathy was head cook at Bethany Village in Horseheads for 33 years, retiring in 2023. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her mother, Jean O’Bryan, in 2006, step father Jesse O’Bryan in 2024, father Allen Coats in 2011, and brother Jerry Coats in 2012.

Kathy is survived by one daughter, Heather L. (Jared R.) Summers of Leavenworth, KS; four sons, Jimmy R. Jones of Elmira, NY, Chris A. Jones and Joshua R. Jones, both of Monterey, and Phillip J. Early in the morning on August 27, 2024, Cindy Stillman, a beloved friend to many in the Finger Lakes area, passed from this earth. She was a vital member of the Wisdom's Goldenrod community in Valois, known for her hospitality, cheerful spirit, and caring for every person and animal she met. Her decades-long meditation practice and study of perennial philosophy permeated everything she did.

Cindy was born on February 10, 1936 in Illinois, and soon afterwards her family moved to Akron, Ohio. After graduation from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, she visited San Francisco and fell in love with the place. She stayed until she needed to return to Akron to care for her ailing mother, and she then took a job in Atlanta.

In the 1970s she moved to Valois, New York, to study with her teacher Anthony Damiani and the Wisdom's Goldenrod community. She worked in student services at Cornell University for many years and served as hospitality coordinator for Wisdom's Goldenrod after retirement.

Cindy's adventuresome spirit led her to take pilgrimages to holy sites in Turkey and India. Closer to home, she explored the philosophy of Paul Brunton, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Sri Shankaracharya, and other great beings whose teachings kept her inner flame alight.

In her later years, Cindy was cared for graciously by the staff at Longview in Ithaca, Bethany Village in Horseheads, and Seneca View in Montour Falls. All of us who loved her are profoundly grateful for the love and dedication of people at these facilities.

Cindy was predeceased by her father and mother, Charles Stillman and Ruth Davis Stillman; her sister Robbie Stillman; her friend and mentor Joan Dawson Carlson; her cherished dog companion Skye; her cats Kingsley, Toby, and Gemini; and many other dear animal friends. Many of her friends from Wisdom's Goldenrod have also departed, and we know that Cindy would want us to remember Paul Brunton's words, “We will all meet again.”

While at R-G he served as a Combat Arms Specialist, training our troops in weapon use, and worked the firing range as a Tower Operator as well as assisting shooters on the line. He was also responsible for all weapons assigned to the base. This included inspection and repair, maintaining ammunition orders, and usage inventories. In 1994 he attended the Combat Arms Conversion Course to officially become a part of the Security Forces. From October 2001 to June 2003, he was placed on Active Duty in response to 9-11 and at one point was called to Incirlik AFB, Türkiye, for a six-month tour. Mike retired as TSgt in June 2006 from Forbes Field Air National Guard, Topeka, Kansas.

Noted Catholic author James Likoudis of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and formerly of Montour Falls, NY, went to his eternal reward on September 3rd, 2024 at the age of 95.

As a convert from Greek Orthodoxy, he was an internationally known apologist and historian who dedicated his life to reconciling his Eastern Orthodox brethren with the Catholic Church Jesus Christ founded. He was a former college history and Government instructor and received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit (2020). James Likoudis served for more than 25 years at the lay apostolateCatholics United for the Faith (CUF). He wrote and lectured widely on ecumenism, religious education, liturgy, sex education, family life, and the role of the laity in the Church. His many books include The Pope, the Council, and the Mass; The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome and Modern Eastern Orthodoxy; Letters to a Greek Orthodox on the Unity of the Church; Eastern Orthodoxy and the See of Peter: A Journey towards Full Communion; Ending the Byzantine Greek Schism; and Heralds of Catholic Russia: Twelve Spiritual Pilgrims from Byzantium to Rome.

James and his wife (deceased) Ruth, were married for 70 years and had six children: Therese (Johnny) Williams, Paul (deceased) (Paulette) Likoudis, Mark (Kathryn) Likoudis, Celine (Mark) Schanzer, Catharine (Thomas) Kader, and Margaret (David) Byerley. He is survived by 35 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren and brother Michael Likoudis.

Jan was born in Waverly, PA on December 26, 1924 to Gertrude and Ralph West. Following her high school graduation from Van Etten in 1944 she became a nurse's aid in Pediatrics at the Robert Packer Hospital. She was married to Rexford Richards in Lockwood Methodist Church in 1947 and raised their three children on the family-owned dairy farm in Alpine. She was a member of the Odessa Baptist Church and, following retirement, of the First Presbyterian Church of Watkins Glen. Jan loved flowers and birds, especially all those she could see through her window, and lived a life of extraordinary public service.

She was an active member of Zonta, the Schuyler County Hospital Auxiliary, and the Schuyler County Farm Bureau, of which she served as secretary and office manager and wrote a column and published a newsletter for a number of years. An avid reader, she instigated the founding of Odessa’s public library and was a longtime volunteer. Janeth was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Rex.

Age 79, of Horseheads, NY, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024. Darwin was born August 24, 1945, son of the late Darwin and Marie Boatman Biddle. He was also pre-deceased by his wife, Susan Ann Bentley Biddle, in July of this year and brothers, Robert Biddle and Charles Biddle; and sisters, Mary Ellen Bradshaw and Barbara Stermer.

He is survived by his children, Sharon (Mark) Braniff, Dena (Sam) Carrigan, and Brent (Jeannette) Biddle; step-daughter, Noel E. (Erik) Klebosits; ten grandchildren, Shane, Lucas and Riley Braniff, Kyle (Stephanie) and Dale (Haley) Carrigan, Kira (William) Valdivia, Jordan, Zachary and Mariah Biddle, and Elizabeth Klebosits; four great grandchildren, Erin Valdivia, Silas and Nolan Carrigan, and Parker Carrigan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will welcome relatives and friends to Elmwood Baptist Church, 230 Elmwood Ave., Elmira Heights, NY on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 12 noon-1 p.m. His Funeral Service will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Fife. He will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery immediately following with Military Honors.

Darwin served his country honorably with the U.S. Air Force and retired after 28 years as a Sergeant from the NYS Dept. of Corrections. He was a member of the Elmwood Baptist Church for several years, serving as Deacon.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife, going out to breakfast, reading, playing cards, but most of all he loved being with his friends and family.

James Vernon Alling

Age 76, of Montour Falls, NY and formerly of Rock Stream, NY, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024. He was born in Waterloo, NY on November 10, 1947, the son of Vernon and Jane (Shirley) Alling, Jr. He was a graduate of Odessa-Montour Central School.

Music was Jim’s passion. He often called on his sisters Linda and Cindy to discuss Music Theory. Those who knew him received many a You Tube video. He was a percussionist. As a teen, he played snare drum under the direction of Dr. Frank Brown at Odessa-Montour Central School. He played professionally with a local group called The Echelons and once was invited to “sit-in” on the song Wipe-Out by the Safaris (performing the tom-tom drum solo seamlessly) for a band touring locally at The Fontainebleau, Odessa NY. He could often be found playing one of many harmonicas in his collection. Before his passing, he was planning to teach himself guitar on his left-handed Fender Stratocaster. He truly wanted to be a Jimi Hendrix!

His interests were many, as evidenced by his enormous collection of scrapbooks filled with detailed notes and pictures of boats, motorcycles, fishing equipment, and hunting rifles. Having had one or more of each. We all remember the hydroplane boat he built from scratch, in the upstairs of our garage at 104 Catherine Street. He planed, sanded, stained and polished the wood till it shone like glass. The launch on Seneca Lake, however, didn’t go quite as planned. Jim was an avid stamp collector since childhood. He took up coin collecting as well. Polishing stones with the patience of Job proved fruitful. They too were a prided collection.

His years of employment as a Machinist at Shepard-Niles, where he worked with brothers Bob and Steve, required accuracy in the smallest of detail and diligence. Jim provided 27 years of that accuracy, amassing a tool collection that was admired by many. He loved science and could often be found reading a book about Tesla or nuclear fusion, then would call brother Paul for “clarification.” He was a wealth of knowledge and used it to provide answers to how things worked.

He enjoyed walking along the railroad tracks near his property in Rock Stream. It was there he met “Happy” the feral cat. It was “the best day ever” for both as they cohabitated for many years after. Can’t forget to mention his sense of humor. If anyone could figure that out it was brother Eddie, they were two of a kind.

To know Jimmy was to know a very prayerful man who could easily recite scripture. It was this knowledge of scripture that got him through some challenging times in his life to the end. He will be truly missed by his children, Jim, Jamie, and Scott, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and siblings.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Jamie (Alling) Shah of Charlotte, NC; two sons, James (Rachel) Alling of Horseheads and Scott (Beth) Magee of Homer, NY; two sisters, Linda (Alling) Golicki of Dresden, TN and Cynthia (Alling) Ciaschi of Montour Falls; three brothers, Robert Alling of Montour Falls, Paul (Yvonne) Alling of Orangeburg, SC and Edward (Shawna) Alling of Alpine, NY; three grandchildren, Kiersten, Brianna and Zachary; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Jesse E. O’Bryan

Age 79, of Monterey, NY, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility in Montour Falls, NY. He was born in Corning, NY on April 10, 1945, the son of Norman W. and Edna J. (Smith) O’Bryan.

Jesse was a PFC with the U.S. Army, serving from 1962-1964. On April 9, 1974, he married his wife, Jean Coats O’Bryan.

Jesse was a pressware operator at Corning Glass for 33 years, retiring in 2000. He loved to go fishing with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed gardening, bees and hunting in his early years. He also liked to watch sporting events on TV.

He was predeceased by his father, Norman O’Bryan, in 1986; his mother, Edna O’Bryan, in 2001; wife Jean Coats O’Bryan in 2006; son Jerry Coats in 2012; sister Rose M. Rook in 1983; and brother Bill Collum Sr. in 2020.

Jesse is survived by three sons, Michael (Melonda) O’Bryan of Monrovia, MD, Douglas O’Bryan of Beaver Dams, NY and Allen (Krista) Coats of Beaver Dams; one daughter, Kathy Wytrwa of Beaver Dams; four sisters, Lilly Mae (James) Buckley of Beaver Dams, Norma (Tim) Cummings of Watkins Glen, Caroline (Scott) McIlwain of Beaver Dams and Cynthia (Lester) Fuller; a brother, David (Diane) O’Bryan of Montour Falls; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Age 77, of Montour Falls, NY, passed away on Wednseday, August 14, 2024 at Corning Center. She was born in Vestal, NY and graduated from Odessa-Montour Central School.

Kathleen worked at Morse Chain in Ithaca at one time and at Walmart in Watkins Glen.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard G. MacDougall, on April 3, 2020; her mother, Geraldine Alice Traver Crispell; grandparents, Agnes Traver and Wilbur (Minnie) Crispell; and sisters, Rebecca Ramondi and Roberta Crispell.

Kathleen is survived by her daughters, Penny (Scott) Sesher of Raymour, Missouri and Danielle (Derrek) Carman of Montour Falls; sons, Michael MacDougal of Horseheads and Earl MacDougall of Montour Falls; sisters, Violet (Gary) Crispell Russell of Endicott, Wilburta Crispell of Vestal Center, and Tammy (Ron) Hendrickson of PA; brothers, Daniel (Linda) Crispell of Binghamton, Timothy (Crystal) Crispell of Vestal Center and Ted Crispell of Vestal Center; four grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery, County Road 10, Alpine, NY. Following the graveside service, there will be a luncheon at 2:30 p.m. at Havana Glen, Havana Glen Road, Pavillion 1, Montour Falls. A Dish to Pass is welcome but not necessary.

Age 64, of Millport, NY, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at home after a brief illness. Erin was born July 7, 1960 in Cortland, NY, daughter of the late Clarence and Harriett Robison.

She was also predeceased by brother Carl Robison.

Erin is survived by her daughters, Jessica (Patrick) Robison and Heather (Mario) Trizzino; grandchildren, Hayleigh, Callan, Zion, Ivy, Aliza and Levi; siblings, Robert (Nancy Kae) Robison, Ralph (Cheryl) Robison, Dawn (Steve) Pitcher, Debbie (Steve) Remenyi, Lori (Tom) Burczynski, and Anita (Win) Crouthamel; sister-in-law, Linda Robison; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Erin has been an employee of Sue's Pine Valley Busymart/Dandy for over 25 years. She was widely known and dearly loved throughout the community. Those who knew her would call her selfless and kind, with a unique, quick wit and welcoming personality.

Erin was devoted to her family and treasured her time with them, especially her grandchildren, who have awarded her "the Gamma of the year" award for 12 consecutive years. The way she mothered throughout each season of life displayed her character, strength and resilience. Along her journey, she grew a deep appreciation for the simple life and has spent the past several years simply content, oftentimes with a Sudoku book in her hand. Her favorite things to do included sitting on her porch watching wildlife, making the best breakfast for the family and going on adventures with her "grands."

Robert N. Mizzoni, Sr.

Age 93, of Watkins Glen, NY, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. He was born in Corning, NY on September 15, 1930, the son of the late Nazzerno and Rose (Petro) Mizzoni. Bob graduated from Corning Free Academy and Alfred State College. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952.

Bob was President of First National Bank in Painted Post and Montour Falls. He then became manager of Chemung Canal Trust Company in Montour Falls. Following his career in banking, Bob owned the Schuyler Hi-Lites. He was also a financial advisor for Schuyler County Headstart.

Bob was a longtime member of the Watkins Glen-Montour Falls Lions Club, holding several positions as well as Past District Governor in New York district. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, where he served as an usher for many years.

Bob was an avid golfer and coin collector. He loved watching football and working on his computer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Delores; daughters, Mary Beth (John) Mizzoni-Diaz of East Islip, Long Island and Gina (Tim) Mizzoni-McLean of Corning; son, Robert (Kate) Mizzoni, Jr. of Watkins Glen; sister, Theresa Spaccio of Corning; six grandchildren, Sam, Sabrina and Gabby McLean, Michael Mizzoni, Mackenzie (Dan) Tillinghast and Kamryn Mizzoni; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Dominick, John and Anthony Mizzoni.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, 905 N. Decatur St., Watkins Glen. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Richard D. “Dick” Bannister

Dick was a truck driver at Shepard Niles for over 40 years. At one time, he was the Police Chief for the Village of Montour Falls Police Department. He served with the Montour Falls Fire Department for over 50 years, proudly driving the pumper truck to serve his community.

He was a long-time member of the Montour Falls United Methodist Church, where he was a former trustee. He formerly served as President of the National Campers and Hikers Association, Schuyler County Chapter.

Dick was an avid NASCAR, SU and Buffalo Bills fan. He enjoyed camping and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Tom (Debbie) Bannister of Montour Falls, Laurie (Mike) Hanlon of Horseheads, and Donna Bannister, David (Kim) Bannister, and Cheryl (Mike) Herold, all of Montour Falls; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Norma Rennells Bannister, in 2020; a son, Richard Bannister; and brothers James, Stanley and Robert Bannister.

Age 53, of Reynoldsville, NY, passed away with family and friends present at Cayuga Medical Center on Thursday, July 25, 2024. He was born on April 14, 1971 in Montour Falls, NY.

He leaves behind his wife, Kay; his three stepchildren, Shane, Marquay and Englund Barber, and several grandchildren.His parents are Edward and Ruth Parlett of Reynoldsville and he is also survived by two sisters, Robin and Kim Parlett; several nieces and nephews; and many aunts and uncles along with cousins who meant a lot to him.

He was predeceased by his grandmother, Florence Parlett, and grandfather, Edward Parlett Sr.,along with a stepson, Matthew Barber.

Scott was a professional truck driver over the road for many years. He was also an avid photographer who worked many dirt tracks, and followed cart racing, from which he made many friends who felt like family to him. He loved hunting, fishing, boating, and good '80s music.

He never met a person who didn’t end up his friend.

Kathleen graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. She was a Registerd Nurse, a chemist and also worked in the food industry. Kathleen had a love of all people she met. She loved laughing, dancing and was always up for an adventure.

She is survived by her son, Mark E I Doherty of Herkimer; two sisters, Mary Buck of Corning and Roseann Cannon of Lawrenceville, GA; one grandchild, Mairin L. Age 60, of Watkins Glen, NY, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at the Shepherd Home in Penfield, NY with his loved ones by his side. He was born in Syracuse, NY on March 2, 1964 to Judith Haughey Phillips and James D. Phillips Sr.; grandson to Albert and Matilda Haughey of Watkins Glen.

James was a self-dubbed Geek, a man who perfected every profession and hobby he pursued -- whether it be wiring houses at the age of nine, pursuing an electrical engineering degree, or teaching himself all there is to know about computers. The man never did anything lightly! Later in life he took it upon himself to become well versed in cars, sport shooting, carpentry, farming, and some might mention his affection for a nice glass of bourbon. Jim fully embraced all that life had to offer and lived by his true authentic self.

James is survived by his loving wife, Maryanne Phillips of Penfield, who gave him a fulfilled life full of adventure, love, and travel; his mother, Judith H. Phillips of Watkins Glen; two daughters, Erin (Adam) Hamad of Manhattan, NY and Lauren Phillips (Alexander King) of Washington, D.C.; his grandson Jude Hamad, and stepson, Josh (Victoria) Broda.

Through loss we saw the beautiful life Jim had built and those who have been by his side to support him, laugh with him, and be around for all of his silly antics.

A small gathering of family and friends will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery. A celebration of James' life will be held on Wednesday, August 14 at 1p.m. at the Watkins Glen Elks Lodge, where family and friends will come together to honor and remember him.

Michael ”Mike” Lapriore

Age 77, of Montour Falls, NY, passed away on August 6, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

Mike was born in Port Jervis, NY on February 28, 1947 to Michael P. and Anna “Betty” Lopriore. He attended Port Jervis High School. After graduation, Mike enlisted in the USAF, serving eight years, three of which were in the Far East. He was a Vietnam veteran. Upon discharge, Mike joined the Port Jervis Police Dept., and after five years transferred to the NY Dept. of Corrections. He served many years at Monterey Shock and Willard D.T.S. He retired after 25 years of service.

Mike enjoyed many activities including hunting, golf, bowling, and spending time with family. He was a long-time member of the V.F.W. and the Montour Moose, and a past member of B.P.O.E.

Mike was predeceased by his father, mother, oldest daughter, and his beloved wife of 42 years, Stephanie, in 2022. He is survived by his daughter Jamie, son-in-law Dennis, and granddaughters Kenley and Cordelia Thompson, all of whom he loved very much.

Mike would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and administrative staff at the Falck Cancer Center and Care First, especially nurse Robin, who provided unwavering care during his treatment.

James R. Guild, affectionately known as Jamie/Gilly, of Montour Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Jamie was 45 years old.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Allyson (Baird) Guild, and their three cherished children: Havana, Broderick "Brody," and Elijah "Eli." Jamie is also lovingly remembered by his parents, James and Rebecca Guild; sister, Erin Guild (Andy Schaefer); and in-laws, Rick and Sharmon Baird.

Jamie lived life with a spirit of adventure and a zest for the outdoors. His passion for dirt bike riding was matched only by his love for the Finger Lakes region, where he found both joy and solace. Jamie's life was a testament to living fully and embracing each moment with enthusiasm. He was known for his vibrant personality and a favorite saying that reflected his fearless approach to life: "If you're gonna be dumb, you've gotta be tough."

Gilly had many friends who were like family to him, each sharing in his passions and adventures. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Sophie Marie Fitzsimmons-Peters

Sophie Marie Fitzsimmons-Peters, wife of Anton Schneider and mother of Desmond and Josie Schneider, was born on May 28, 1990 and died on July 9, 2024. Sophie's life was defined by love, kindness, intelligence, and adventure. She was a beautiful woman whose thirty-four years wove a tapestry of humanity.

Sophie is the treasured daughter of Marie Fitzsimmons and Kirk Peters. She is the most beloved sister and sister-in-law of Jores and Carolina Peters and Jared and Katie Peters. She is the aunt of Jori, Santiago, Jovan, Maya, Griffin and Harrison. She was adored by the grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, and her Peace Corps family. Anton's family thought the world of her.

Sophie's home on Seneca Lake extended to the Watkins Glen Schools and her dad's veterinary clinic. She thrived in the arms of her family, a bounty of friends, and the devotion of her teachers and coaches. She was an accomplished student and a fierce athlete. She loved learning, she loved sports, and she loved her friends. And how we loved her. Sophie had a beautiful childhood.

Sophie attended SUNY Geneseo, where she received a first-rate education and the glorious friendships of her soccer girls. Her semester in Nicaragua enriched her burgeoning global being, and her compassionate nature flourished. Upon graduation, Sophie was accepted as a City Year Volunteer and moved to Detroit, where she met and fell in love with Anton while quietly and effectively lifting up her students at Osborne High School.

Sophie, in the footsteps of her Grandma Janie, earned her Masters of Social Work, graduating from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in 2016. Sophie's internship in the Maryland Office of the Public Defender cemented her compassion and responsibility to each person she encountered. Sophie went on to work with Catholic Charities of Baltimore as a school-based therapist, extending her counsel to adults in the community.

In 2018, Sophie's lifelong dream of joining the Peace Corps came to fruition as she and Anton were sworn in as Peace Corps Volunteers in Uganda. Sophie's position as a literacy educator was deeply satisfying. Her gentle nature, appreciation of her colleagues, and joy of children made her a beloved member of St. Bruno's Primary School for the two years they lived in Uganda. Sophie's teaching and coaching were developed with deep respect and collaboration with her fellow teachers and principal. Sophie's daily work in the school library was joyous and meaningful. Sophie's Peace Corps Project of building latrines at St. Bruno's continues to make a difference in the well-being of the school community.

Sophie's experiences in Uganda, South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, and Nicaragua shaped her worldview. Her travels to twenty countries filled her spirit and challenged her keen intellect, informing her sense of responsibility as a global citizen.

Sophie and Anton made their home in Baltimore, where she worked as a Program Analyst for the U.S. government, doing the daily work that makes the Affordable Care Act accessible to all.

She appreciated her team and believed in their mission. Sophie's devotion to our country extended from her daily work to her quiet and steady advocacy for social justice and reproductive rights.

Sophie was a beautiful mother, kind and gentle, patient and playful. She and Desmond had the happiest and most joyous love. Josie's nine months in the most intimate and rhythmic nurturing of Sophie's being and brief time in her mother's arms is a forever imprint of the greatest love.

Sophie was a tender and compassionate wife, thoughtful and pragmatic. She loved Anton deeply and treasured their adventurous yet grounded life in Baltimore. Sophie was proud of Anton's exquisite teaching in the Baltimore City Schools. She loved their neighborhood and the sweet community that encompassed them. In this past year, their travels with Desmond to France and Scotland brought such happiness.

Our gratitude and wonder for the beauty of Sophie is deep and abiding. Our grief in her passing is profound. The outpouring of your love and support has soothed our hearts and we are so grateful.

Age 92, of Prescott Boulevard, Deltona, FL, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024 in Orange City, FL. She was born in Ridgebury, PA and moved from Montour Falls, NY to Florida in 1993.

Mary retired from Westinghouse in 1992. She enjoyed Bingo and many summers at their cottage on Keuka Lake. Mary was an active member of the Trinity Church in Deltona for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Clifford Doolittle; four sons, Thomas and Gary Doolittle, Jeffrey and David Buchanan; and one daughter, Deborah Rice.

She was born in Sayre, PA on September 13, 1941, the daughter of Leslie and Alice (Reynolds) Boyce, and attended Odessa-Montour Central School. On April 29, 1972, she married Benjamin Fraboni in Cayuta, NY.

Shirley was a machinist at Axiom in Ithaca, NY for 38 years, retiring in 2004. She loved to take cruises, go to casinos, ride trains, camp and play Bingo. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, listening to music, Jamborees, dancing, buying clothes and playing the clarinet. She loved her dog Jinxy, who was her companion, and loved getting together with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; sons, James and Jeffrey Maphis; and brothers, Leslie, Charles, Frederick and Elwood Boyce.

Age 69, of Beaver Dams, NY, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Guthrie Corning Hospital with her loved ones by her side. She was born in Penn Yan, NY on October 2, 1954, the daughter of the late Brian and Betty (Emery) Rogers. She married Victor G. Merrill on October 20, 1979 in Watkins Glen, NY. He passed away in 2014.

Cindy worked for Schuyler County Head Start and as a hairdresser. She enjoyed caring for her best friend Ella and her chickens.

Age 91, of Montour Falls, NY, was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Bethany Manor in Horseheads, NY. She was born on July 4, 1933 in Theresa, NY, the daughter of the late Chester and Marie Bauter.

Sally graduated from Fredonia State College with a Teaching Degree in Elementary and Music Education. On June 25, 1956, she married Dr. Robert C. Michel in Blasdell, NY. Dr. Michel predeceased her in 1988.

Sally was a pianist for Odessa-Montour Central School District, Watkins Glen Central School District and Glen Baptist Church for over 45 years. She also worked for the Schuyler County Board of Elections for more than 15 years. She was a longtime member of Glen Baptist Church.

Sally enjoyed cheering on her children and others at sporting events over the years. She taught a women’s exercise program at Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour elementary schools. She loved antiquing and household sales, including holding her own sale twice a year. She enjoyedtennis, downhill skiing, and visiting relatives and friends. Above all, she loved serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in every possible way!

Our brother brought laughter and joy into the lives of all who knew him. With his quick wit and infectious sense of humor, he could always lighten the mood and put smiles on our faces. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but his legacy of humor and love will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Barbara graduated from Watkins Glen High School and later worked as Assistant to the Superintendent at the school for 27 years. She loved working at the school and interacting with all of the students and faculty. Their love of her was evident as they dedicated the 1976 Yearbook to her, the only time a yearbook has been dedicated to someone other than faculty.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Samuel G. Baldwin, sister Joyce Darling, and

Age 77, of Watkins Glen, NY, died June 17, 2024 at home.

Born June 25, 1946 in Jersey Shore, PA, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Hilda J. (Poust) McGonigal.

He was a 1964 graduate of Clearfield Area High School, Clearfield, PA and a 1973 graduate of the Penn State University.

Neal served his country in the U.S. Army, obtaining the rank of sergeant, and served a thirteen-and-a-half month tour in Vietnam.

He was a member and past deacon of the First Church of Christ, Lock Haven, PA, and in 2014 became a member of Saint Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church, Watkins Glen.

Mr. McGonigal retired in 2009 from Keystone Central School District, Lock Haven, PA, where he was Assistant Business Manager/Board Treasurer. Previous employment included Piper Aircraft Corporation - Manager Financial Reporting, and International Paper Company - Manager Financial Systems and Control.

Neal served the community youth programs, coaching in the Lock Haven Pony League and the Mill Hall AYSO Soccer program, was coach and president of the Mill Hall Youth League Baseball, and was a volunteer assistant coach for the Bald Eagle Nittany High School Boys Soccer Team.

Surviving is his wife, the former Marie Zastawny Hammond, of Watkins Glen/Oswego, NY. He is also survived by son Brian N. McGonigal and wife Paula, along with grandsons Zachary and Dylan, of Kylertown, PA; and son Brent R. McGonigal and his wife Erin, with granddaughters Kiara, Lily and Charleigh of Mill Hall, PA. He is also survived by his sister Doris J. (David) Mitnick of Suffolk, VA; and step-son, Thomas (Joanne) Hammond of Oswego; step-daughter Kristina Noyes and granddaughter Sara Noyes of Oswego; and a great-grandson due in the fall.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Katina McClain, who was by his side every day; children, David (Lynne) Robinson of Elmira, NY, Ed (Cortney) McClain of Dallas, NC, Mason (Cassidy) McClain of Canandaigua, NY, Aaron (Vanessa) Robinson of Ohio, Caylee (Jeremy) Hillson of Canandaigua and Bryce (Jessica) McClain of Cohocton, NY; siblings, Peggy (Cliff) Perry of Watkins Glen, Melissa (Gene) Melendez of Himrod, NY, and Mark McClain of Watkins Glen; 20 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins; and Darlene (Dick) Jaynes of Reading Center, NY, who was considered his mom.

Bruce enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing or riding his motorcycle. When someone needed a helping hand he was there. He worked at Jayne’s Auto Parts for many years. Most of all, he loved being with his grandchildren, family and friends.

There is a deep sorrow within all of his family that he left too soon. He is with his mom now. We love you Bruce, and you will be in our hearts and memories. Fly High!

James Affeldt, a longtime resident of Rock Stream, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 80 years young.

Jim was born in Elmira, NY on September 11, 1943, the son of the late Frances and Helen (Sykora) Affeldt. He enlisted in the Navy right after high school at the age 18. Jim referred to this period in his life as a time “when I knew everything and could do anything I put my mind to.” He had a fulfilling welding career in the Navy working in countries like Scotland, Japan, and Antarctica. Jim retired from the Navy in 1982 after serving his country for 21 years.

After he retired from the Navy, he and his wife Anita owned and operated A & J Welding and was known as “the man who could weld anything.” His most common welding joke was “I can weld anything, but the crack of dawn.” His work can be seen all over Schuyler County and beyond; these stand as a testament to his skill and desire to do the best job possible. There are many times he helped others for free or at a reduced rate. Often he would not charge churches for his labor, telling them instead that “they could pay him by praying for him. We all need prayers.”

Jim was a serious student of the Bible and always looked for the deeper meaning of the “Living Word” that helped him love God and his fellow travelers in this world. He never judged people harshly and found that by listening to others, he could hear the Lord speak to him. He could always find God in the Word, in others, and in Nature. He expressed this through his deeds, thoughts, and how he lived his life. He was a true and faithful servant as evidenced in all his personal and business relationships. He was the most generous, kindhearted, and giving person anyone could ask for. One could just imagine God welcoming him home with the words “Well done good and faithful servant. Inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” And Jim’s reply to God might be, “I need to work, you got anything that you need welded?” Mitch Albom once wrote “Strangers are only family you have yet to meet.” Jim has met many people in his life that he has traveled for 80 years, all are family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Frances (Fran) Affeldt. Jim loved his family very much and was often referred to as “little Affeldt” when he was of school age because of the times he tried to emulate Fran.

Jim is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 40 years, Anita P. (Sanchez y Perez) Affeldt; his three daughters, Theresa (Tim) Warne, Kimberly (Keith) Walker, and Michelle (Paul) Temerowski; and one son, Raymond Affeldt (Debra); his two sisters, Kathleen Knab and Julie Osborn Taylor; Paula Affeldt (sister-in-law); 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins in many states including Oklahoma, North Carolina, California and Arizona. He lovedthem all very much and would do anything for them. He influenced all of those close to him in his own quiet and prayerful way; and for that we thank him beyond any words that could convey our heartfelt gratitude for his life.

James will be sorely missed by his wife and children and many loved ones and acquaintances. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public calling hours at this time. A celebration mass of his life will be announced in the fall.

Francis Richard Cleveland, known by most as “Dick,” was born in Montour Falls, NY on October 5, 1940, the son of the late Skip and Viola Cleveland. He passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024 at his home in Montour Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Marie Cleveland; children, Judi (Cliff) Lott, Betsy and Scott Cleveland, Jennifer (Chad) Carrigan, and Kyle Smith; grandchildren, Jamie Lott, Margaret (Kyle) Barry, Camdyn Smith, Abrianna Carrigan, Olivia and Chloe Cleveland and Grace Anne Smith; and great grandsons Nicholas and Anthony Jasionowski. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Pauline Cleveland and Gail Beecher; brother William Cleveland; and nieces Karen McGrath and Barbara O'Brien. Dick was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy (Beecher) Cleveland, in 2001, his granddaughter Samantha Lott in 1997, and his brother Jon Cleveland in 2018.

Dick was employed for 38 years by Shepard Niles Incorporated, most of which were as their
industrial relations manager. He was also employed for over 20 years at Robert H. Treman
State Park. He served four years in the United States Marine Corps and two years in the U.S.
Marine Reserves. He was a past president of the IAM Local Lodge #1765 and past president
of IAM District lodge #58. Dick was a life member and an officer for several years of the
Marine Corps League Detachment # 458 and a member of its color guard and firing squad.
He was a life member of the American Legion Post 1612, Big Flats, and a member of VFW Post 6083, Elmira Heights, Watkins Glen Elks Lodge #1546, Montour Falls Moose Lodge 426, the Marine Corps Association, and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

Dick was the most generous, kindhearted, and giving person anyone could ask for. He loved
all of his family and would do anything for them. He helped them all to be the people they
are today, and for that we thank him. He loved to hunt and fish in his spare time. He wanted
special recognition to go to his son-in-law Cliff Lott for taking him under his wing and
making him fly straight. Without our daughter Jennifer it would have been impossible to
fulfill Dick's final wishes.

He is survived by his mother, Doris Ector; brothers, Charles (Laurie) Ector of Truxton, NY, Randy (Ellen) Ector of Lawrenceburg, IN, and Joey (Megan) Ector of Stanwood, WA; brother-in-law, Corky Kent; uncles and aunt, Peter Martin, Max and Wilma Smollen; 15 nieces and nephews; numerous cousins; and lifelong best friend Lynn Greenwood. He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Ector, in 1994 and by sister Tina Kent in 2021.

Steven was a 1981 graduate of Watkins Glen High School. He was a carpenter, farmer and later in life worked at Walmart, where he enjoyed helping the customers. He loved bowling and was on several teams over the years at “Johnny’s Lanes” in Watkins Glen.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, June 7, 2024 from 4:00-5:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 5:00 p.m. The family will provide flowers. Mike, born in Corning, NY on November 20, 1950, was the son of the late Elwyn and Verna (Young) Learn. He was a lifelong resident of Schuyler County and enjoyed his days on the shores of Seneca Lake. In recent years he found a home and community he loved in Hudson, Florida.

Mike was an alum of Watkins Glen, Class of 1969. He was a multi-sport athlete and was inducted into the WG Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Mike attended Ashland University in Ohio and studied business. He was a proud member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Upon graduation, he returned home and worked for Learn Motors, eventually taking ownership of the business which he ran until his retirement in 2014.

Patricia Lee Angelo, 85 of Gastonia, NC and formerly of Schuyler County, NY, died May 15, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on May 28, 1938 in Geneva, NY, and was the daughter of the late William Lee and Laura Bailey Flaherty.

After a brief time at welding school, Pat began her career at Marine Midland Bank in Watkins Glen, NY. It was there in that small beautiful village at the end of Seneca Lake that she met, fell in love with, and married James J. Angelo. His career took them to Lancaster, Ohio in 1964 and this is when Pat began her second career as a stay-at-home Mom, raising four daughters known as the “4-K’s." Another career move and Jim’s desire to play golf 365 days of the year took them to Gastonia, NC in 1980.

She returned to the banking industry that she loved and retired from Wachovia in 2003. The Club Drive house became the epicenter for friends, family, and the occasional stranger. Mama Pat was the consummate hostess and although she was a very proud Irish woman, she was taught the fine art of Italian cooking and became known for her pasta dinners. It has been rumored that the house was also host to an occasional high schoolparty or two. We can neither confirm nor deny, but our sources are kids who attended Ashbrook High School between 1983-1994. Pat will be remembered most for her love of family and friends, her front door always being open to all, her generous spirit, her sassy sense of humor, and in the later years, her missing filter.

Pat is survived by four daughters, Kris McFadden and husband Owen of Gastonia, NC, Kim Watson and husband David of Belmont, NC, Karin Norman and husband Jamie of Gastonia, NC, and Kathi Hamilton and husband Todd of Gastonia, NC; seven grandchildren, Emma McFadden, Maeve McFadden, Jack McFadden, Nick Norman, Josephine Watson, Kennedi Hamilton, and Spencer Hamilton; sister, Shirley Ormsbee of Waterloo, NY; sisters-in-law, Joanne McLaine and Laura Lee; numerous nieces and nephews, and all those who considered Momma Pat a second Mom.

In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Angelo; in-laws, James Angelo, Sr. and wife Jo Angelo; sister, Virginia Rondinaro and husband Louis Rondinaro; brother, Dick Lee and wife Ann Lee; sister, Barb Specchio and husband Ted Specchio; brother, Bob Lee, and brothers-in-law Bill Ormsbee and Dick McLaine.

The family would like to express their gratitude to friends and family members for their unwavering support. A special thanks to Centerwell Home Health of Gastonia and to Dr. Tambarella and Dr. Jarrett and all the nurses, CNA’s and techs who work on the 5th floor of Caromont Regional Medical Center. You are all exceptional and truly amazing at what you do.

Age 90, who was born and raised in Watkins Glen, NY, passed away quietly at home in Maryland on April 21, 2024 after a brief illness.

She was preceded by her mother Ann Compese, father Francis Compese and brother Joseph Compese.

Sylvia spent the last 20 years in Maryland near her sister Lynn Killigrew and Lynn's children. She leaves behind her sister and great nieces, great nephews, nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed traveling, playing bingo, Bible study and spending time with family. She will be missed by many.

There will be a burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Watkins Glen, on June 22, 2024 at 10 a.m. All are welcome.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beautiful mother, Patricia Annette Lewis Gardiner. She went to heaven after a short illness on Monday, April 29, 2024 at Cayuga Medical Center.

She was born to the late E. Fay and Helen (Woodworth) Lewis, on October 6, 1932, in Waverly, NY. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Eugene A. Gardiner in 2016; her daughter Susan Gardiner Manges in 2011; son-in-law Richard Manges in 2018; brothers Edward Fay (Genieve) Lewis and Charles William (Bill) (Blanche) Lewis; and sisters, Charlotte (Delmar) Bleiler and Henrietta (John) Doak.

Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Dawn (Ted) Larison of Preble, NY, Karen Gardiner of Elmira Heights, NY, and Denise (Mark) Switzer of Odessa, NY; eight granddaughters, Kristin Harris, Shannon (Robert) Smith, Bridgett Kellogg, Rebecca (Matthew) Saros, Elizabeth (Drew Hamilton) Larison, Elise (Desiree) Craver, Jacqueline (John Blaha) Switzer, and Jennifer (Herbert) Whittaker; great grandchildren, Jasmine (Justin) Henry, Haley Smith, Joseph Saros, Isabella Saros, Luna Belle Craver, Emily Donnell, Erin Donnell, Billie Elizabeth Blaha, Peyton Whittaker, Olivia Whittaker, and Grayson Whittaker; and great-great grandson Oliver Henry. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Her Brookdale Memory Care Facility family was a great comfort to her and her family for the past 2 ½ years. They called her mom or ma, and she accepted them all as her additional children. telling them that she loved them daily.

Special thanks to the Cayuga Medical Center for its exceptional care, understanding and services over the last few weeks.

Patricia attended Odessa Central School. She married the love of her life, Gene, in 1950, and started her family. She was a homemaker, working at Westinghouse and in her father-in-law's “Gardiners 5 and 10 cent Variety Store” in Montour Falls, until she had her four daughters. She then worked at the Odessa Montour School in the cafeteria, and soon she started driving bus and took the school census for many years. She also worked at the Harold Lee Liquor Store in Montour Falls. Pat started a restaurant in the late 1970's called “Pat's Place” in Odessa, serving breakfast and lunch six days a week. After she closed the restaurant, she worked for Bradlees Department Store in the Cash Office.

Pat was a lifetime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Catharine and served on the Vestry and as the treasurer. She also organized the annual Fall Harvest Dinner and Spring Chicken BBQ for St. John’s. She was a founding member of the Odessa Fire Department Auxiliary and served as Treasurer. She was a Girl Scout Leader and belonged to Chat-A-While, a women's group in Odessa. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and catered weddings and other functions with her friends, Sharon Rounds, Julie Matthews, and Marjorie Hayes.

Pat and Gene loved to camp; they had many trips with family and their special friends. She was a talented seamstress, not only making her own children's clothes but also making dresses and doing alterations. She donated her time and talents sewing hats for cancer patients at the Falck Cancer Center, knitting newborn hats and blankets for Schuyler Hospital, and prayer shawls and lap robes (napkins) for the elderly and shut-ins. She received the Presidental award for volunteerism. Knitting and crocheting in her later years brought her much joy, and there probably was not a baby born in a three-county radius that she did not make a blanket or sweater for.

Rest peacefully, mom, your love will forever live in our hearts. You taught us everything in life, except how to live without you. Love forever, your girls.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at a service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 4938 County Rte. 14, Odessa NY, on June 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at Highland Cemetery. A light luncheon will follow at the Montour Moose Club.

She was instrumental in filing a grant application to repair and restore historic sites in Montour Falls, and she helped formulate plans that transformed the old railroad bed through Catherine Valley into a hiking and biking trail stretching from Watkins Glen to Elmira.

Age 69, of Kennesaw, GA passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024. She was born to Charles “Chub” and Jean Webster Williams on April 1, 1955 in Montour Falls, NY.

With her family, she lived in Montour Falls, spending idyllic and happy summers in Himrod, NY on the shores of Seneca Lake. She attended Odessa-Montour High School, Corning Community College and Keuka College (Penn Yan, NY), graduating with a bachelor’s degree majoring in Art. After becoming a born-again Christian and being water-baptized on July 5, 1980, she moved to Cortland, NY to join Cortland Covenant Community Church, later called New Life Fellowship.

As her Art major hinted at, she loved color and design, and worked in retail sales, first at Howlands in Ithaca, NY, then Chappels Department store in Cortland. Her co-worker Gloria Werninck introduced Kathy to her nephew and future husband, Douglas “Doug” Irons the day after Thanksgiving, 1983. Instantly smitten, he quit his job in Albany, NY and moved to the Cortland area in June 1984. They married on May 30, 1987 and moved to the metro Atlanta area in 1990, making their home in Kennesaw, GA starting in 2002.

Age 88, of Tampa, Florida and formerly of Watkins Glen, NY, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and her parents, Frank and Mae Wilkinson.She is survived by her children, Melissa Doak (Claudia Brenner), Jennifer Cainas (Michael Hayes), and Luke Doak; along with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Sally was born in Concord, New Hampshire and was raised in Wolfeboro Falls, New Hampshire. She was passionate about education and was a proud graduate of Brewster Academy and the University of New Hampshire. She moved to upstate New York in 1973 and retired to Watkins Glen, moving to Tampa in 2023.

She was an active member of the Lakeview Assembly of God Church for many years until her health declined. Sally was a gifted seamstress and gardener, an avid reader, and enjoyed a great conversation at her kitchen table with family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral Home, 122 N. Age 78, of Horseheads, NY passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. She was born in Montour Falls, NY on January 25, 1946, the daughter of Francis and Joyce (Stone) Crane. She graduated from Odessa-Montour High School with the Class of 1964 and went on to attend college in Cobleskill for a year.

Cheryl married Harry Boynton in 1998. She was an accountant at Cornell University and later a school bus driver for the Horsheads School District. Cheryl loved cars -- classic, antique, and sports cars. She was a member of the Glen Region Sports Car Club, DAR-Chemung Chapter and Rebekah Lodge (Odd Fellows). She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.

Cheryl is survived by her husband of 25 years, Harry Boynton; daughter, Rebecca (Tom) Neilson of CA; two stepsons, William Boynton and Robert (Peggy) Boynton of Great Falls, MT; two grandchildren, Keri (Adam) Leach and Styles Trinkl; three great grandchildren, Aiden, Aria and Avery; sister, Peggy Yaw; brothers, Francis (Lorraine) Crane, Terry Crane and Richard (Sylvia) Crane; special friend, Barbara Luther; and by several nieces and nephews. Age 81, of Alpine, NY passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 14, 2024. She was born on October 18, 1942, the daughter of Donald M. and Evelyn M. France.

Donna was raised in Schoharie, NY, on a dairy farm. She graduated from Schoharie High School and went to work at Remington Rand in Cobleskill, where she met Al Thurman. She was a secretary and he worked in the mail room. She could always tell when the mail was coming because Al would be whistling “Blue Moon” while he walked down the hallway to her desk. They were married on January 28, 1962. They raised two daughters, Michelle and Marcy. They lived in Elmira, NY for a short time before finding their forever home in Alpine.

She graduated from Ithaca High School and later from C.C.C. with a degree in Nursing. Sandy was a registered nurse for many years in both Schuyler and Tompkins Counties. On July 20, 1996, she married Robert States in Montour Falls, NY.

She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Mark Hipple; sister, Debra Hipple; granddaughter, Jenieve Savunen; and stepson, Joel E. States.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Robert G. States; two daughters, Torrie Savunen of Horseheads, NY and Autumn VanOstrand of Odessa; one son, Jeffrey (Amy) Savunen of Horseheads; six grandchildren; two sisters, Susan (Randy) Randall of Daytona Beach, FL and Karen Harvey of Spencer, NY; brother, James (Evelyn) Hipple of Honolulu, HI; aunts, Joan Lockwood and Bonnie (Bob) Bastion; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Age 70, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024, in his home in Watkins Glen, NY, with Leslie, his loving wife of 50 years, by his side. Born on December 23, 1953, in Hornell, NY, Dennis lived a life filled with love, happiness, and joy. While raising a family and working, he and his wife also enjoyed raising and showing Shetland Sheepdogs for over 40 years.

Dennis earned his Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Alfred State, and then began his engineering career at Sear Brown in Elmira, NY, where he worked for many years. He then moved to Tetra Tech, Inc. in Ithaca, NY, where he excelled as a Senior Electrical Engineer and became highly respected for his work on projects spanning multiple continents. His knowledge and skills were sought after by numerous partners within the field.

Throughout his life, Dennis was an active member of several clubs. He was a member and past president of the Finger Lakes Kennel Club and the Central NY Shetland Sheepdog Club, and a member of the Elmira Kennel Club and the American Shetland Sheepdog Association. Dennis also served as an area coordinator for the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, and an instructor for the Schuyler County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Dog Pack. Additionally, Dennis was a past member of the Dundee Flying Club, holding a pilot's license, and where he and his family enjoyed many fly-in breakfasts on Memorial and Labor Days.

Dennis was an active family man, and dear friend to many. His charming and joking personality shone through in all interactions, and his big smile and laugh were contagious. His commitment to those he loved was evident. and he cherished his marriage to Leslie. His mischievous eye twinkle will be missed, but will remain in memories.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife Leslie; sons Jeremy Smith (Cheyenne Wells) of Savona, NY and Bradley Smith (Bethany Brown) of Watkins Glen; brother Roger (Joanne) Smith of Apalachin, NY; sister Diane (Robert) Davison of Cocoa Beach, FL, and grandchildren Amanda, Emily, Zoey, Emma, Kimberly, Liam and Ewan. He was predeceased by parents Dean and Margaret Smith, and brother Duane Smith.

A visitation and memorial service to honor Dennis J. Smith's life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4thSt., Watkins Glen. The visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the memorial service at 1:00 p.m.

Bessie Lamos Barrigar

Age 84, of Odessa, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at her home. She was born in Long Lake, NY on October 11, 1939, the daughter of the late Maurice and Lillian (Bailey) Lamos.

She received her MA in Education and was a teacher in the Odessa-Montour School District for 18 years, retiring in 1995. In addition to being a teacher, she was also a Pastor’s wife. She supported his ministry in three states. Bessie was an excellent pianist and soloist, and used these talents for the Lord.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harry E. Barrigar; three daughters, Pastor Tamara Veilleux (Tony) of Odessa, Loueda Bleiler (Dr. Brian) of Odessa, and Beth Horner (Bill) of Gillett, PA; foster daughter, Becky Carr (Chuck) of Williamsport, PA; two brothers, Father Bill Lamos (Julie) of CA and Rev. Marv Lamos (Jackie) of Gloversville, NY; eleven grandchildren; several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruthann Meade; and by four grandchildren.

Nancy A. Fazzary

Age 80, of Watkins Glen, NY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, surrounded by her family. Nancy was born in Buffalo, NY on October 30, 1943.

Nancy married Dominick "Art" Fazzary in February, 1962. They worked together driving taxi at Watkins Glen State Park for several years before taking over LaFaces in 1972, changing its name to "Art & Nancy's". This is where Nancy not only mothered her own 5 children, but also the numerous young people who frequented their establishment. Nancy never hesitated to "hold a tab" for anyone. Art & Nancy's was often referred to many as "the store" where it gave many parents peace of mind knowing their children were chaperoned while hanging out with friends after a HS game, or dance, while enjoying pizza, eclairs, Mexican sundaes, playing pinball, pool and foosball.

After 37 years of marriage she continued serving the community following Art's passing with the help of many family members. Nancy loved bowling with her sister and close friends, playing euchreand bingo, listening to Elvis music and spending endless hours in her flower garden.

She is survived by her children, Tina Fazzary Ector, Donna (John) Patykula, Dominick Jr. (Teresa) Fazzary, Michael (Jeannette) Fazzary and Jeffrey (Heidi) Fazzary; 14 grandchildren, Caleb (Mary), Elizabeth (Andrew), Nathaniel, Krista, Dylan (Kayla), Connor, Leeah, Bloom, Gem, Sequoia, Ixchel, Quil, Gabrielle (Calvin) and Dominick; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law Sam (Doris) Fazzary and James (Marie) Fazzary, sister-in-law, Reda Fazzary, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceasedby her husband, Dominick “Art” Fazzary; parents, Harold and Donna (Lilley) Mickel; step daughter, Diane Gamble; sister, Carol (Dominick) Schimizzi; and many greatly loved in-laws.

Obituary: Nancy Anne Walsh

The local YMCA had a father-child program (Indian Guides and Indian Princesses) in which John, Robert and Kathy had each participated when they were old enough to attend school. Each had to choose an “Indian” name. When Annie was five years old, she became an Indian Princess, too. She chose the name Rainbow. Over the later years the name Rainbow came to be emblematic of her life -- clouds and darkness penetrated with bursts of sunshine enhanced by her unique insights and loving, caring spirit. By the time Annie had reached 6th grade she was a star -- a straight A student voted most popular in her class who set school records in athletics. In gym class one day the teacher tried to teach the students to climb a rope. The teacher wasn’t doing very well demonstrating the technique. Annie stepped up, took hold of the rope, and climbed hand over hand to the top of the rope, 30 feet above the floor.

By high school some aspects of Annie’s behavior had started to become worrisome. Counseling didn’t help. We didn’t realize at the time that a devastating psychiatric illness was starting to appear. After graduating from high school Annie decided to move out on her own, near home and enrolled in college part time. Her life continued to go awry. It wasn’t until she was in her early 20’s that her illness was diagnosed -- schizoaffective disorder -- a combination of schizophrenia and bipolar illnesses. From there on Annie’s life became a series of ups and downs -- ranging from time spent in psychiatric hospitals and halfway houses to time living on her own and being creative. During the many years that Annie lived in the Berkeley, CA area she was the featured poet at various poetry readings. Through it all our Rainbow, Annie, continued to be a caring, loving, insightful family member. Her understanding of being adopted was typical of her upbeat insights. She told her brother Robert, “I know I am in the right family -- the family where God wants me to be. It just took God a bit longer than usual to get me there.”

Fledra Rose Ector (Parmalee)

Age 85, of Watkins Glen, NY has left this earth, to join the love of her life on April 4, 2024. Fledra was born on May 28, 1938 in Penn Yan, New York. She was the daughter of Charles and Winifred Parmalee.

Fledra graduated from a small school house in Bellona, NY, where she also met the love of her life, Robert Ector. After getting married, the pair started a little farm in Watkins Glen, where they had eight children.

Fledra was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ector (1996); her parents Charles Parmalee and Winifred Gary Parmalee; her brother Charles Parmalee; and her son Robert James Ector (2006). She is survived by her children, Jon Ector, Bonnie Rappleye, Tim (Starlene) Ector of Watkins Glen, Holly Ector (Gordon Sherwood) of Bath, NY, Sam (Kathy) Ector of Watkins Glen, Daniel Ector of Odessa, NY, and Andrew Ector of Watkins Glen; 25 grandchildren; and 49 great grandchildren.

Fledra was a wonderful devoted wife, mother, daughter, grandmother and great grandmother to all of her family. She loved to accomplish all of her wonderful knitting and crochet projects, she loved to make her family blankets, sweaters and clothing. When it came to love she had for all her family, there was no comparison.

Brian was born on October 23, 1962 in Montour Falls, NY. He is survived by his mother Genevieve (Harry) Goossen; son Joseph Swarthout; brothers Harold J. (Vivian) Rappleye and Randy (Tina) Rappleye; sisters Darlene Rappleye and Kim (Dale) Delong; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A gathering to honor Brian's life will be held on Tuesday (April 9th) at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4thSt., Watkins Glen from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.; followed by a funeral service honoring his life at 8:00 p.m. Brian will be laid to rest at Lake View Cemetery in Watkins Glen the following day.

Patricia Ann Carpenter Haughey

Age 88, of Corning, NY, died Friday, March 29, 2024, surrounded by her loving daughters. Patricia was co-owner of Haughey Funeral Home, along with her loving husband, Jack, from 1966 until their retirement in 2012.

Patricia was born at home in Swartwood, NY on August 20, 1935, the daughter of Meta (Woolever) and Kenneth Carpenter. She received her education in the Odessa School District and studied nursing at SUNY Plattsburgh, where she received her nursing degree.

Patricia is survived by her daughters: Cheryl Ann Haughey of Dundee, NY; Margaret Ann, EdD (Lee, DBA) Schimmoeller of Forest, VA; Elizabeth Ann (Michele) Gallo of Georgetown, TX; Amy Ann (Mark) Eagle of Oneonta, NY; Michele Ann (Shawn) Donegan of Wolcott, NY; grandchildren: Brittany Kibler (Devin) Bryan; Leigha Schimmoeller, DPT (Anthony) Vassallo; Kenneth Carpenter Schimmoeller; Jack Haughey Schimmoeller; Kelly Haughey Gallo; Jacqueline Gallo (John) Dillard; Megan Ann (Joel) Maloney; Connor Haughey (Darian) Eagle; Carlie Ann (Lt. Patricia was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Jack; parents, Meta and Kenneth Carpenter; brother, Carlton Carpenter; sister-in-law, Alice Joyce Haughey; grandson, Clancey Gerald Donegan; and her mother and father-in-law, Geraldine and John Haughey.

Patricia was a lifelong learner, accomplished artist, avid reader, nurse, successful businesswoman, and compassionate counselor. Her passion for helping others in the community was evident in her commitment and service to others through her work at Haughey Funeral Home. For many years, Patricia also served as the Executive Director of the Steuben County Council on Alcoholism. Patricia’s outreach extended throughout Corning, as she participated in many community organizations over the years. She was a member and engaged volunteer of St. Patrick’s Church/All Saints Parish, Catholic Daughters, Corning Hospital, a member of The Board of Directors for the Salvation Army, and a member of Business Professional Women.

When Patricia retired, she enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time at Seneca Lake with her best friend and love of her life, Jack. After retirement, Patricia returned to her love of painting and created many beautiful works for her family.

Patricia’s dedication to her family was paramount. She lovingly raised five daughters alongside her husband Jack. She was actively involved in the education of her daughters, always putting their schooling and faith first. Patricia’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her world. She loved them unconditionally and was very proud of their accomplishments. Her grandbabies loved their “Bubbie,” and they brought the biggest smiles to her face even in the last days of her life. Bubbie cherished every minute she spent with them, and they cherished her right back! One of the best memories her grandchildren have is the Muffy Bear picnics she hosted at her home on Seneca Lake. The laughter and love she shared with her family created many lifelong memories.

Calling hours for Patricia will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 4:00-6:00 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street in Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 155 State Street in Corning on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 9:00 AM with Father Matthew Walter officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Odessa.

Age 64, of Elmira, NY, a long-time Elmira Star Gazette employee, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Brian was born in Harrisburg PA, a son of the late Paul and Rita (Mailey) Pappalardo. He is survived by his sister Karen Pappalardo; brothers, with their families, Mark and Andrea Pappalardo with sons, Gregory and Richard; and Andrew and René Pappalardo with children, Taylor, Meg and "AJ" (Andrew John).

Brian’s career in journalism started while he was a senior in high school when he went to work for the Star Gazette, starting as a sports agate clerk. This part-time job would turn into a 32-year career with the newspaper. From his high school days to his completion of three college degrees -- an Associates Degree in Business from Corning Community College, a Bachelors of Arts in English from Elmira College, and a Masters of Arts in Communications from Ithaca College -- Brian held various positions with the newspaper. He was a reporter, page designer, copy editor, and night editor.

While working at the newspaper, Brian also worked at Elmira College for a couple of years, where he was a writing tutor and instructor. After his newspaper career, Brian made a successful transition to a freelance writing career. His clients were a diverse mix, including a Fortune 500 company, an eating disorder treatment center, a law firm, a ski resort and a food bank. Brian loved his career in writing and even had a theory, called the “Pappalardo Theory of Relativity”: “Everything that happens in the world has a connection to Elmira.”

Brian loved his circle of friends that he had had since his high school days, along with his Star Gazette family. He was an avid reader and New York Yankees fan. In addition to his journalism career, Brian also enjoyed writing screenplays. He loved his family; and was a fun uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Oranell Charlotte Telehany

Oranell Charlotte Telehany

Oranell Charlotte Telehany, lovingly known as Nellie, was born on July 8, 1936 in Buffalo, NY. She departed this life on March 19, 2024, leaving a legacy of love and support while receiving care at Three Rivers in Painted Post, New York.

Oranell was a beacon of strength to those who knew her, always lighting the way with her wisdom and care. It was not uncommon for stray animals to find their way to her home for love and food. Her green thumb was a testament to her nurturing spirit, as she loved all forms of gardening, be it flowers, fruits or vegetables.

Oranell was a woman of impressive accomplishments. She served as the personal secretary for NY State Senator Dutton Peterson for several years, taking great pleasure in volunteering for political activities. She also spent years at National Cash Register (NCR) in Ithaca and retired from there as a supervisor. Not only was she successful in her career, but she also excelled in her hobbies. In her retirement, she discovered the art of marquetry at the Corning Senior Center and became so skilled that she won a ribbon at the fair. Yet, despite her many achievements, what mattered most to Oranell was her family. She was incredibly supportive of her three daughters and tirelessly wished for nothing less than a better life for each of them.

Oranell is survived by her daughters, Lisa Centurelli, Mary Crainey, and Jennifer Skinner, along with her brother, Jared (Mary) Brown. Her legacy also continues through her three granddaughters, two grandsons, two great grandsons, three great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jared and Charlotte Brown; her husband, Michael Telehany; her infant brother, Robert Brown; and sons-in-law, Russell Crainey and David Centurelli.

Oranell Telehany lived a life full of love, care, and support. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. The family thanks the staff at Three Rivers for their years of caring for mom. We invite all who knew and loved her to leave memories and upload photos to the memorial page, to celebrate the life of this incredible woman.

Roland L. Voorheis

Age 76, of Valois, NY, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY on March 17, 2024 following a brief hospitalization. He was surrounded by his entire family.

Roland was born in Montour Falls, NY on March 26, 1947, one of eight children born to Edwin and Betty (nee Crippen) Voorheis. He worked for the family paving business until he left to work in the oilfields in Oklahoma, Alabama and Ohio, where he spent many years as a watchman and operator. He then returned to the area, where he worked for Dalrymple Contracting and eventually Seneca Stone. He was an equipment operator and an expert in paving and road construction. In his retirement, he operated the family farm in Valois with his wife and sons.

He was a proud man who worked hard to earn everything he had. He didn’t make excuses and was quick to stand for what was right. His sizable stature and massive hands intimidated some, but those close to him found comfort in his presence. He was a gentle-hearted giant who wouldn’t hesitate to help a friend in need, without asking for anything in return.

His family was his whole world, and he would take on the whole world for his family. His door was always open, all you had to do was pull up a chair at the kitchen table. No one left without a cup of coffee or a bite to eat. He would “charge you the same” whether you ate or not, so you might better enjoy. He was known for telling animated stories, sharing words of wisdom, and affectionately picking on his loved ones, especially his grandkids. When he winked at you and flashed that mischievous grin, it was a sure sign that he was up to no good. He was always down for a game of euchre, and he’d even give you lessons whether you wanted them or not.

Roland made a positive impact on everyone who crossed his path and had the ability to turn strangers into dear friends. He always said that a man’s handshake was as good as his word, and if he shook your hand, you knew he would stand behind it. He was a firm believer in God, family, and Country. Although we wanted more time, he lived a full, honest life. He accepted Jesus Christ into his life, and he knew that he would be reunited with his loved ones in Heaven.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda; his children, Vincent of Lodi, Ernest of Valois, Joanna (Mark) Clark of Alpine and Kurtis (Dawn Potts) of Lodi; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Kyle, Michelle, Derek, Ernie Jr., Laura, and Ashley; eight great grandchildren, and his siblings, Theodore Herforth, Gail (Adolph Bussey) Mazourek, and Linda Abbott. Roland was preceded in death by his granddaughter Christina and by his siblings, Edwin “Buck”, James, Jeanie Pike, and Carol Osborne.

The family would like to thank the South Seneca Ambulance responders, Dr. Francis, and all the wonderful nurses at Cayuga Medical Center ER and ICU for the excellent, compassionate care they provided.

After college, Alan returned to Watkins Glen and resumed working in the Watkins NAPA store with Gerry Strang, a job he had started when he was still in high school. Alan had over a 30-year career behind the counter at the NAPA store in Watkins and later at the Trumansburg location. His easy and calm manner and his knowledge of parts and stock made him an ideal person to deal with the public. Alan always had a kind word and a smile for anyone who entered the store.

In addition to working at NAPA, Alan was also known as an accomplished photographer; he enjoyed doing wedding photos as well as capturing pictures of the local landscapes. In 1999, Alan and his wife, Kathy, formed Kaladre Cockers and went on to raise award-winning Cocker Spaniels. With their fur babies, they traveled the dog show circuit where their dogs won many ribbons and championships. After many years of raising Cocker Spaniels, their focus turned to raising Boston Terriers. Alan and Kathy were (are) members of the Elmira Kennel Club, assisting with and participating in various dog shows on the East Coast and Canada. Following his retirement, Alan remained at home in the care of his wife until January 2024.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Chapman) Drake; sisters, Deborah (Brian) Hather, Sarah Matthews and Wendy Drake; brother-in-law, Dr. Edward (Jean) Chapman DVM; nieces and nephews Mark Matthews, Brandon (Danielle) Matthews, Megan (Martin) Thrasher, Juliet (Jay) Abendroth, Meredith (Brian) Kohlbecker and Ella Chapman, along with several nieces and nephews.

Age 81, of Victor, NY, peacefully passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Light Hill Hospice in Canandaigua, NY after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

He is survived by his wife Ellen, son Philip (Vicki Barniak), daughter Anne Rine, son-in-law Jamie Rine, and grandsons Nicholas, Andrew and Jason Rine. He is also survived by his brothers Louis Quatrano and Anton Bahns; sisters Phyllis Mathews and Christine Bonsignore; sister-in-law Dorothy Chatt, and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his father, Angelo, and his mother, Vera.

He loved growing up in Watkins Glen, NY, in the WGHS Class of 1961.After graduating from Alfred State College, John proudly volunteered to serve his country in the Army as a nuclear weapons specialist in the British occupied section of Germany. When he returned from service, he spent time working on his car before deciding to continue his schooling in Buffalo, where he met his wife to be, Ellen. They married on July 25, 1970.

The next chapter of their story took them to Canandaigua and eventually to Victor, where they raised their children. John enjoyed his career as a machinist and the associated challenges in research and development of new products. All benefited from his ability to repair anything using his technical skills, creativity and extensive collection of tools.He also enjoyed spending time with hisgrandsons at their sporting events and on special trips they would take.

Please join in a celebration of his life to be held on Saturday, April 13 at the Presbyterian Church of Victor, 70 East Main Street, Victor, NY. The service begins at 11 a.m., followed by a reception and luncheon in Corey Hall.

John will be laid to rest at the New York State Veteran’s Cemetery in Romulus at the convenience of the immediate family.

Age 67, of Lakeland, FL and formerly of Montour Falls, NY, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 after a 2 1/2-year battle with cancer.

Pat was born in Montour Falls on April 30, 1956, the daughter of the late Harland and Ruth (Hopper) Trenchard. She achieved a degree from an automotive mechanic school.

Pat loved all animals, but had a deep love for her three dogs. She also loved to go to Disney World and Universal Studios to ride her favorite rides, Soarin’ and the River Ride. Pat was actively involved in her neighborhood and would happily help anyone in their time of need. She always lived life to the fullest and her famous quote was “One Life, One Ride.”

Pat is survived by her daughter Shondra Trenchard and adopted daughter Bianca Bristol of Winter Haven, FL; two sisters, Ruth Columbus of Henrietta, NY and Carol Allen of Alpine, NY; one brother, Harland Trenchard of Odessa, NY; and by 21 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gloria Legare, in 2009; and by a brother, Tom Trank, in 2021.

Age 87, of Vestal, NY, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, passed from this life into eternal life on March 3, 2024, after an extended illness.

His devoted wife, Janet L. (Berry) Smyder, predeceased him by only a week. He was also predeceased by parents, John William Smyder, Sr. and Leona Mae (Butler) Smyder, and one brother, John "Bub" William Smyder, Jr. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph F. Smyder, Jr. and Beth Smyder (Chesapeake, VA); daughters and son-in-law, Valerie A. Smyder (Vestal, NY) and Kathleen J. (Smyder) and Sean L. Powell (Fairfax Station, VA); five grandchildren, Rebecca M. and Rachel M. Smyder, and Summer N., Madeleine C. and Sophia G. Joe loved enjoying his vacation property on Seneca Lake with his immediate and extended family. He provided priceless childhood memories for them through boating, waterskiing, and fishing. In the winter, he would travel to the lake to hunt with his father, brothers, and other family members. He had a joyful and easy sense of humor, with a warm and welcoming laugh. His jokes, "dad-isms" and sayings were plentiful and memorable. He had great musical ability which included playing the French horn and singing a beautiful, rich tenor and baritone in the church choir. He had an innate ability to harmonize seamlessly and often sang favorite songs to his children. Joe was a kind, gentle, good humored and loving grandfather. He always greeted family with a smile and huge hug and said goodbye the same way.

An ardent lover of the outdoors, she found solace in lifelong activities such as caring for and riding her horses, hunting, sewing, painting, gardening, creating beautiful quilts for family, and healing quilts for church friends fallen ill.

Among those who welcomed Beverly into eternity are her parents D. Ray and Mabel Crandall; her son John R. Viglione; son-in-law Anthony J. Fraboni; and granddaughter Samantha Viglione. Additionally, she joins her 13 siblings; Robert, Raymond, Ray, Pearl, Timothy, Glen, Ora, Clarence, Genevieve, Lela, Alice, Marion and Virginia.

Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 63 years, Thomas C. Viglione; son Thomas C. Bob was born in Watertown, NY on March 16, 1945 to Arthur Jacob Wells and Dorothy Ruth (Cramer) Wells. He was a 1963 graduate of Spring Valley High School in Rockland County. Bob was a life-time salesman working as a district sales manager for All-State Insurance Company for many years, with the majority of his career serving more recently with the George E. Hoare Memorial Co. in Watkins Glen.

Bob was a dedicated friend and family man. He enjoyed returning to Baldwinsville to spend time visiting with his family. He especially enjoyed traveling by car to Florida on a moment’s notice, stopping along the way to visit with his many dear friends and family members. He was an avid car enthusiast, and always lit up when speaking of his beloved Corvettes. He told many fond stories about the vehicles he has owned over the years and the great memories they provided him. Bob was also a very proud and dedicated member of AA and put his heart and passion into helping others achieve the sobriety successes he enjoyed for more than 25 years.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his former spouse Regina Celestian, son, Bryan Wells, daughter Cindy Yaple (Gary), grandchildren Frankie (Dustin), Kristi (Lance), Jacob, Alyssa (Baker), Greyson, and his extended family of Mike (Sue), Dani (Jim), Nick, Ashlee (Rachel), and Ryan (Chelsey) and his many great grandchildren.

Age 85, of Vestal, NY and formerly of Burdett, NY, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, passed from this life into eternal life on February 25, 2024, after a brief illness.

She was well known for her kind and gentle spirit, her loyalty and for always thinking of others. She heroically cared for her beloved husband as his health deteriorated, and felt it was her calling. She adored her children and was regarded by them as being incredibly loving, supportive and involved, a true angel on Earth. Her cookies and pies were famous, which she selflessly gifted to friends, family, and church. Her grandchildren have precious memories of learning to bake with her. She promised to give her recipes to them after her passing, ensuring her gift for baking with love was a legacy for generations.

Growing up on a dairy farm in Burdett, Jan found a love for all animals. She especially loved her rescue dogs and considered them her family. Most of all, she had an unwavering love for our Lord Jesus Christ and practiced her Catholic faith with devotion.

She was born on May 24, 1968 in Olean, NY, the daughter of Michael Duffy and Cindy Dick. Dawn graduated from Alfred State College. She was an IT Specialist with Siemens Energy for 17 years. On June 13, 2009, she married Kenneth S. Pennypacker in Montour Falls.

Dawn loved cooking, baking and spending time with her family. She enjoyed scary movies, puzzles, and reading murder mystery books. In her free time, she enjoyed lounging on the back deck, fishing, visiting camp and gambling at the casinos.

Dawn is survived by her husband of 15 years, Kenneth S. Age 80, of Burdett, NY, and formerly of Trumansburg, passed away on Monday, Nov. 20, 2023. Born in Geneva, NY, he was the son of Kay and Prof EE Griffith.

After graduating from Geneva High School and Hobart College, Griff led the most interesting bachelor life one could ask for. As a roadie for the band "Blue Oyster Cult," he traveled the States and met many famous musicians. He enjoyed the years he spent traveling to NYC to sell Christmas trees and he had quite a reputation for his potato pancakes when he traveled to cook at festivals. Griff spent many years bartending at the Rongo in Tburg or you could catch him in Geneva watching a Hobart lacrosse game. He was most proud of working with the security crew at Grassroots for so many years that he lost count. In his later years, he worked at the local Arc homes in Ithaca until he finally decided to retire on his 75th birthday.

Griff enjoyed telling stories (very slowly) to anyone who would listen. He loved living in the woods on Texas Hollow until his health began failing and he moved in with his niece in Burdett.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward "Ace" and Gary; sister-in-law, Cathy Griffith; niece, Peggy DeMinck; and his beloved Texas Hollow Cats, Beat It, Scram, and the Interloper.

He is survived by three nieces, Debbie (Bill McNicholas) Griffith of Waterloo, NY, Lisa (Ron) Grandel of Virginia, and Terry (Chico) Taney of Burdett.

It is with bittersweet yet comforting thoughts that we remember Thomas Michael Cheplick, who fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, February 3rd at the age of 95.

Born in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, Tom left his hometown to join the Army and served honorably in the Korean War. After his service, he attended Muhlenberg College and graduated from Mansfield University, obtaining his BS in Education. He eventually moved to Elmira Heights, where he fell in love, not only with his adopted town but also his soul mate, Mildred Petelchuk. In April, they would have celebrated 69 years of marriage.

Tom was hired at Thomas Edison High School to teach Science and Physics and remained there for 38 years before retiring. By all accounts, he was a beloved teacher and mentor -- and liked nothing better than to hear from former students. He had a genuine interest in their lives and achievements.

Along with academics, and because of his own participation in college baseball and football, he also coached numerous young people in tennis, swimming, football and, especially, baseball. And although he was averse to accolades, it was a well-deserved honor when he was inducted into the New York State Coaches Hall of Fame as well as the Edison Sports Hall of Fame, along with his big brother Dave. He rooted for the New York Giants, Syracuse basketball, Penn State football and was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.

It would be very difficult to find anyone who did not know or was not impacted by Tom Cheplick. For many summers, he ran the Heights summer recreational swimming program. He oversaw the teaching of thousands of kids how to swim. He eventually became involved with the Corning LPGA tournament, volunteering his time. He was a tonsured Reader and mainstay in the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church choir in Elmira Heights, where he worshipped for over seven decades. Ever the lover of music, Tom was a beautiful tenor with the Mark Twain Barbershoppers. He loved traveling, gardening, dancing, and reading; his interests and hobbies were many and varied. But of all the words written about Tom, he was most proud of his family.

He is survived by his wife Mildred (Petelchuk) Cheplick and his sister, Maryanne (Cheplick) Turko; his children Thomas (Maria) Cheplick, Steven (Shirley) Cheplick, Julie (David) Cordingley, and Deanna (Tim) McLaughlin, and his grandchildren, Andrew (Jillian) and Alyson (Chris) Cordingley, Larissa and Julianna Cheplick, Thomas, Nikolai, Melania, and Alexei Cheplick, and Shannon Woodruff (family), along with much beloved nieces and nephews.

All can attest to his kind, humble, and sincere nature. His devotion to God guided everything. His family welcomes you to visiting hours at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 140 Horseheads Blvd., Elmira Heights on Friday, Feb 9th, from 4 p.m. with a Panakhida service at 7 p.m. On Saturday, there will be Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. followed by his final resting place in the church's cemetery.

Age 92, of Frederick, Maryland and formerly of Montour Falls, New York, passed from this life on Monday, January 15, 2024 at Country Meadows in Frederick, MD.

Born on July 8, 1931 in Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas Petta and Anna (Terry) Petta.

An alumna of North Syracuse High School, Loretta was valedictorian, president of her class, and voted most likely to succeed. She continued her education later in life at Elmira College, Elmira, NY, and resided in Montour Falls until moving full time to Fort Myers, Florida in 2005.

Before retiring, Loretta worked as Odessa-Montour Central School’s District Treasurer for many years. Prior to that she worked as the Assistant to the President of Corning Community College and the Bursar of Lakemont Academy. She served on the Odessa-Montour School Board of Education, the School Board Association for Schuyler-Chemung-Tioga Counties, the Board of Directors of the Chemung County School Districts Federal Credit Union, the Ann Page Federal Credit Union, and held the position of President of the Schuyler County Democratic Women. She also managed the family construction company after the death of her husband, Richard Manning.

She is survived by her son, Anthony R. Manning (Margaret); her granddaughters Ashley Urban (Stephen), Leigh Margaret Manning (Inwook), Jordan Manning (John), and Mattalin Zetts (Adam); her great grandsons Ian Jamison, Hugo and Elam Hwang, and Micah Zetts; her step-daughter Sherry Manning Champagne (Norm); her step-sons William Chapman and Richard Chapman; her step-grandsons Alexander Chapman, Brendon Chapman, Brandon Chapman, Kevin Chapman, and their children; her sister-in-law Judy Gray, and her four special step-nieces.

She was predeceased by her husband, William R. Chapman, her first husband Richard W. Manning, her brother Thomas Petta, her step-son Dick Manning, and her step-daughter Vivian Leigh “Mimi” Manning Perry.

Because of her father’s Naval service during WWII, Loretta was a member of the American Legion in Fort Myers, Florida and was recognized for her abundant contributions of many years, including hand-knitted hats and scarves for active-duty servicemen. Loretta’s favorite pastimes included collecting antiques, playing bridge, visiting Disney World, cheering for Syracuse University sports teams, and enjoying her most cherished role -- that of a beloved “Grammy.”

A celebration of Loretta's life journey will take place on February 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Frederick, MD with interment at a later date at Hope Cemetery inCorning, NY. Pat worked at International Salt in Watkins Glen for over 30 years. She enjoyed snowmobiling with her husband Bob. She also enjoyed reading her many books. Pat loved watching over all the wild birds in her backyard that would come back year after year.

Pat had a beautiful soul and was always there for her family whenever they just needed someone to listen. She had a special way of always making everything better. Pat will be truly missed by everyone who came into her life.

Age 83, of Elmira, NY, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024. He was born in Barton, NY on November 28, 1940 to Edwin and June (Wood) Schoonover. Burton served with the U.S. Navy as a Radar Specialist from 1958-1962.

Burton was a man of many talents. You might say he was a Renaissance Man. He was a highly accomplished woodworker, model ship builder, tinker, artist, musician and animal lover. He designed and built his own timber frame home, created several cherished stained glass pieces, crafted his own instruments and made muzzleloaders. He was a primitive tipi camper and served many years as President of the Land of the Senecas Muzzleloaders Club.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Karen (Searle) Schoonover; a daughter, Tiffany Schoonover (John Owens) of Erin, NY; a son, Scott Schoonover (Tammy Ettenberger) of Horseheads, NY; niece, Melissa (Jimmy) Albright of OH; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents and his cherished grandmother, Margaret “Mag” Wood, from whom he learned many of his life talents.

Gladys E. Chaffee

Age 88, formerly of Montour Falls, NY, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Elcor Nursing Home in Horseheads, NY. She was born in the Town of Catharine, NY on May 30, 1935, the daughter of the late William and Gladys (Lisk) Thomas.

Gladys was a lifelong homemaker. She babysat and helped raise her friend Anne’s children. She enjoyed watching TV; her favorite channel was Hallmark. Gladys loved to sit outdoors in her rocking chair. She loved dogs, especially her dog Cocoa who waited at the rainbow bridge for her, and Anne’s dog Rosie.

Gladys is survived by her son, Jimmy Chaffee of Watkins Glen; step-daughters, Stephanie and Ida Chaffee; two grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver, Anne Centurelli and her children, Darryl, Jessica, Amy and Joshua. She was predeceased by her husband, James Chaffee, and a son, David Thomas.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery, County Road 10, Alpine, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Humane Society of Schuyler County, 124 Marina Dr., Montour Falls, NY 14865.

Age 67, of Burdett, NY passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at home.

She was born in Ithaca, NY on July 18, 1956, the daughter of the late John Taylor and Grace (Forgatch) Wilken. She graduated from Trumansburg Central School with high honors and attended TC3. Gerri was a secretary in the Ithaca City School District for many years. She was a member of the Montour Falls United Methodist Church. Gerri loved her dogs and enjoyed remodeling and decorating houses.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, John Winner Benedict; two daughters, Julie Bauman and Jamie Bauman; two sons, John R. Benedict and Chris R. Benedict; brothers, David Taylor of San Diego, CA and Rodney Taylor; father, Dr. John Taylor of San Diego; four grandchildren, Bryce, Jake and Ellie Benedict and Ciera Babcock; and cousin, Lisa (Lee) Forgatch.

She was predeceased by her mother, Grace Wilkin; grandparents, John and Mary Forgatch; and aunt and uncle, Bob (Irma) Sayman.

After Gerri passed, John found a framed photo of their wedding with a note attached that Gerri left for him that read “Life is an occasion -- RISE TO IT. Don’t be sad because I died ... Be happy because I lived. I had a wonderful life!”

Charles E. “Butch” Decker

Age 76, of Watkins Glen, NY, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024. He was born in Montour Falls, NY on September 8, 1947, the son of the late William and Doris Field. He married his wife, Vicky Bennett Decker, in Montour Falls on February 24, 1973.

Butch retired out of Monterey Corrections as a NYS Correction Officer after 28 years and was a Taxidermist in his spare time.

Charles was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He was a former member of the Millport Hunting Club, Mechanics Club and Fingerlakes Trollers Association. He loved watching the Miami Dolphins and watching his grandson Jax play sports.

He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Judy Croft and Gail Ann Burgess; brother, Robert Decker; and nephew, David Decker.

Charles is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Vicky Decker; son, Chuck Decker (Kristen Page) and their son Jax of Watkins Glen; daughter, Michelle Kendrick of SC; brothers, David (Lois) Decker of Rock Stream, NY and William (Megan) Field of Odessa, NY; brother-in-law, Richard Croft of Odessa; sister-in-law, Rita Decker of Odessa; granddaughter, Courtney Hickey; and by several nieces and nephews.

Richard O. "Dick" Bauman

Age 73, of Elmira, NY, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Monday, January 8, 2024, due to a heart attack. Richard was born in Montour Falls, NY on August 30, 1950 to the late Oakley Richard and Margaret Pound Bauman.

Richard graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1968 and went on to Alfred State College, graduating with an HVAC degree. After college, Richard went to live in Rochester, NY, working at Strong Memorial Hospital where he met Beverley Ann Estes. Richard and Beverley were married in 1972 and moved to Odessa, NY in 1973. Richard then opened Bauman Appliance on Main Street in Odessa.

Afterward Richard was introduced to R/C airplanes by some of the locals in the area and learned to fly. Shortly after, the appliance store was transitioned into a hobby store primarily and became D&B Hobby. Richard made many local lifetime friends in the hobby industry and taught many people to fly and build airplanes while supporting flying clubs, 4-H and Boy Scouts. After Richard and Beverley divorced, he ran the store until he closed it in the mid 2000's.

Richard was an avid photographer and loved all forms of aviation and auto racing. After closing D&B Hobby, Richard was able to turn his lifetime passions into a profession, taking photos at many sporting events, air shows and racetracks all over the world.

Richard is survived by his daughter Elizabeth (James) Chase and grandchildren Cody, Landen, Lindsey, Alyssa and Alex of Windsor, NY; son Christopher (Nicole) Bauman and grandchildren Mackinley, Grady and Griffin of Indianapolis, IN; brothers Patrick (Melissa) Bauman and Steven Bauman; brother-in-law Charlie Haeffner; nieces and nephews Jonathan, David and William Haeffner, Leisl (Kevin) Moriarty, Trevor (Elise) Bauman and Jordyn (Sherry) Hazelton-Mohr; many great nieces and nephews; special friend Linda Harnas; and many friends that he loved or considered family. Richard was predeceased by his parents; sister Susan Haeffner; and brother William Bauman.
